ROSCOE NELMS
Meet our Juniors Coach Roscoe Nelms!
I was exposed to volleyball from the day I was born because of my dad, but I started to play competitively when I was 16 years old
As a kid, I played in GCVA tournaments in Galveston, then I began indoor at AVA when I was 17. I then went to college in California and played for Santa Monica College.
At SMC we got placed 3rd in the State Tournament and I received the All-Tournament Team award. I’ve just started my adult career in beach and have won many local tournaments and placed in out of town ones as well.
I have coached indoor and beach volleyball for about three years now. I like coaching because having played volleyball in many different places, I have a lot of knowledge I can share with others and I like to see other players grow. I also enjoy the endless growth opportunities coaching allows. As coaches, we always need to be on our toes learning and researching the new ways to do things so we can develop young players into great ambassadors of the game.
My college coach told me often that “you don’t know until you go,” which would always push us to stay out of our comfort zone. He’d say that if you’re comforatble doing something it probably means you’re not working hard enough because change/development is hard and uncomfortable. That would constantly push me to work harder at everything I did.
Outside of volleyball I enjoy hanging out with my family and travelling. Also, I have the best dog, Sonny, who takes a lot of attention. 😉
I have a very tight-knit family. My parents, Raymond and Jerri, sister, Keegan, and brother, Cody, all love the sport of volleyball. You’ll probably see them at Third Coast either playing or supporting in some way!
