DAVID UPDEGROVE
Meet our College Prep Coach David Updegrove!
Coach David Updegrove grew up in Southern California playing both indoor and beach volleyball in Santa Monica from the time he was a teenager. He played as outside hitter for SMBC club and North Hollywood High School, competing in Junior Olympics and earning All-City honors in Los Angeles. In college, he played as outside hitter and libero for the club program at UCLA from 2005-2009, competing nationally with a top-5 finish each of his first three seasons at UCLA. While in law school at UC-Berkeley School of Law, Updegrove trained with the club team as an outside hitter.
Updegrove transitioned to beach full-time and started playing CBVA tournaments in Southern California in 2009, culminating with winning his “AAA” rating at Will Rogers State Beach in 2011. He continued playing CBVA tournaments until moving to Houston in 2014. Updegrove has competed in AVP Qualifiers, TVT, TXBVA and AVP America tournaments across the country, in addition to many local tournaments here at Third Coast Volleyball Club. In 2021, a decade after first earning his “AAA” rating, he went back to Santa Monica and re-earned his AAA with the same partner he played with back in 2011.
Updegrove has been coaching basketball and volleyball off and on since he graduated college and he joined Third Coast Juniors in 2021. He and his wife Page have two young children and are both practicing attorneys in Houston.
